Junkyard, salvage yard, scrap yard or u-pull-it: what's the difference?

Junkyard
The everyday word for a lot full of old, wrecked or end-of-life vehicles. Most junkyards make their money selling used parts and crushing what's left for scrap.
Salvage yard
The same business with a more formal name, sometimes called an auto wrecker, auto recycler or dismantler. Many salvage yards are full-service: you call with year, make, model and part, and they pull it.
U-pull-it / pick-and-pull
A self-serve salvage yard. You pay a small admission fee, bring your own tools and remove the part yourself. Prices are usually far lower than full-service yards.
Scrap yard
A metal recycler. Scrap yards buy metal by weight (steel, iron, copper, aluminum, brass) and often buy whole junk cars for their scrap value. They generally don't sell parts.
